Forget the summer-ready body—at Living Stone, we’re all about the summer-ready patio. From a tiny balcony or cozy city garden to a stunning villa terrace: with these handy tips, you can get any outdoor space ready for summer, whether you own a home or rent an apartment. Ready to make your summer paradise shine like never before?

Vertical gardening

Saving valuable floor space is key if you only have a balcony instead of a garden. Our top tip? Create vertical gardens. It’s a smart solution when you’re short on space. Attach hanging planters to the railing or wall and fill them with colorful flowers or tasty herbs for cooking. This way, you can add greenery to your balcony in no time.

Brighten up your patio with lighting

Fancy reading a book on your patio on a balmy summer evening? Yes, please! If you want to enjoy your patio for even longer, you’ll benefit from some atmospheric lighting. From twinkling string lights and floor lamps to lanterns and candles, lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere and lets you spend more time outdoors.

Make yourself comfortable

There’s nothing quite like enjoying an aperitif outdoors or throwing a proper BBQ! It’s the epitome of summer, if you ask us. Invest in comfortable outdoor furniture and go for multifunctional pieces: a garden chair at the dining table that also doubles as a first-class lounger. Do you have a balcony or small patio? Then opt for compact outdoor furniture, such as folding chairs or a bistro set. Add cushions for extra comfort.

Create shade and privacy

Want to protect yourself from the sun while also creating some privacy? The answer is crystal clear: set up a parasol, awning, or canopy. A nice shaded spot in the garden is a must-have. That way, you can sit outside comfortably without overheating. To create extra privacy, you can use bamboo mats or taller plants.

Brighten things up

Bring summer indoors, put your flowers on display, and make it as colorful as you like. Do you have a sunny patio or a shady one? Choose your plants accordingly. For example, go for lavender, roses, and small fruit trees in the sun, and opt for hydrangeas, ivy, and ferns in shady spots. Plant them in flower boxes or hanging baskets to add an extra touch. Don’t forget to water and fertilize the plants regularly to keep them healthy.

Bye-bye, bugs

Buzzing and crawling insects can sometimes really spoil the mood when you’re enjoying yourself on the patio. Think of flies cheerfully circling your food or wasps eager to join the party. Before you know it, your appetite can disappear along with the atmosphere. Scatter lemons studded with cloves here and there. Wasps and mosquitoes aren’t fond of that. So, two birds with one stone! Or plant mosquito-repelling herbs around your patio, such as mint, rosemary, and lemon balm. This way, you’ll keep the number of buzzing insects to a minimum. There you go—now you can sit down to eat with peace of mind.

Whether you own a house with a garden or rent an apartment with a small balcony, there are always ways to get your outdoor space ready for summer. With these tips, you can transform your patio into a beautiful summer oasis where you can relax and enjoy the sun.
